Challenge Visy has a current Osmoflo Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, which they initially rented for 2 weeks. After 6 months the rental plant is still on site and will continue for the next 9 months. The client’s existing sand filters are significantly undersized for pre-filtering the brackish water for long-tem use. The extended use of the RO plant is resulting in high costs associated with premature cartridge filter fouling and replacement, rapid RO membrane fouling, decreased RO membrane performance and

Solution The addition of a rental Ultrafiltration plant removes particles that have the potential to foul the RO membranes. This system ‘bolts on’ to the existing Osmoflo BW600. This solution results in operating cost savings as cartridge filter life prior to RO process is significantly increased, while ensuring reliability of consistent water supply. This solution also provided a cost effective approach, to what could have simply been a longer-term expensive rental, and was one the client had not considered.

Result Improved RO plant reliability and sustained water supply. The interim UF solution for an RO plant gives Visy time to determine their longer-term requirements.

Visy Pulp & Paper produced over 1.3m tonnes of paper in FY2012-13.
